Here are a few things to keep in mind as you are explaining Grandma’s disease to your child.

1 – Decide to explain it accurately. Many times, parents try to tell their children as little as possible about diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. Not telling your child what is happening can be more damaging in the long run than having an honest discussion about what is going on.

2 – Make the conversation age-appropriate. A small child might not understand the word “genetics” but a teenager will. Answer as much as they can ask in terms that they can understand and take cues from their body language and verbal responses to ascertain when they’ve had enough. Make sure that they know you are available for any questions they may have at that moment or in the future after they’ve had a chance to think about what you’ve told them.

3 – Emphasize that Grandma is changing. Explain what “having Alzheimer’s” means in the ways Grandma’s behavior will affect them. Is Grandma forgetting names? Is Grandma getting lost? These are things that you can explain to your child. Explain that the change can be gradual or seem to speed up at times, but that Grandma is still Grandma.

4 – Assure your child that Grandma still loves them. This is especially important if your parent has forgotten their name or started showing signs of accelerated Alzheimer’s. For a young child just discovering this disease, it can mean everything to know that the person they know and loved still loves them.

5 – Explain that your child did not cause this. Some kids feel responsible for everything, even if they had nothing to do with it. If your child has ever been scolded by Grandma, he or she might feel guilty for her behavior because of what they did wrong.

6 – Tell your child that he or she cannot “catch” Alzheimer’s. This can be a huge concern for children of any age. Younger children may wonder if they can “catch” it like it was a regular cold and older children might wonder if they themselves might get the disease someday.

7 – Watch your child’s reaction. Even after you’ve explained Grandma’s disease, your child may feel uncomfortable around her and not want to be around her as much. This can be made worse by Grandma’s increasing disinterest in your child. Observe your child’s reaction and gently encourage activities with Grandma.

Last April, Americans turned in 376,593 pounds—188 tons—of prescription drugs at nearly 5,400 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Four days after the first Take-Back event in September 2010, Congress passed the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow an “ultimate user” of controlled substance medications to dispose of them by delivering them to entities authorized by the Attorney General to accept them. The Act also allows the Attorney General to authorize long term care facilities to dispose of their residents’ controlled substances in certain instances. DEA has begun drafting regulations to implement the Act, a process that can take as long as 24 months. Until new regulations are in place, local law enforcement agencies like HMHP Police and the DEA will continue to hold prescription drug take-back events every few months.

The USDA established the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that create healthier school environments by providing nutrition education, nutritious food and beverage choices, physical education and opportunities for physical activity. Furthermore, the school was required to prove its compliance with the physical activity criteria of the HUSSC according to age group.

In the award ceremony, John Magnarelli, Director of Special Nutrition Programs – USDA, presented a HealthierUS Bronze School banner, a commemorative plaque and a check for $500 to the school.

With this award, Norwalk Public Schools reiterates its commitment to promoting a healthy school environment for its students. The cost of smoking and obesity among more than 30,000 Mayo Clinic employees and retirees was measured between the years 2001 and 2007.

James P. Moriarty, MSc, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester analyzed the results and found that both obesity and smoking were associated with excess costs for health care, but compared to non-smokers, average health costs were $1,275 higher for smokers.

The costs for the obese members of the group were $1,850 more than for those of average weight. However, and most shocking the numbers for those with morbid obesity blasted up to $5,500/year.

Moriarty says, “This [information] may lead to underestimation of the true incremental costs, since obesity is a risk factor for developing chronic conditions.”
