class="releaseDateline">Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) June 27, 2011

Paul Alper of Deb Group wants you to know there is only one version of Deb Group’s new rap music video – the clean one. This is appropriate for a company that provides innovative hand hygiene products and dispensing systems worldwide.

Alper is the Vice President of Strategy and Development at Deb Worldwide Healthcare (a Deb Group company) and also takes the songwriter credit for “The WHO 5,” a fun and instructive music video outlining the importance of hospitals following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Five Moments for Hand Hygiene.

Designed to be used as an innovative, contemporary and dynamic training tool to educate hospital staff and other healthcare workers about the WHO five essential hand hygiene “moments” or opportunities, the rap highlights Deb Group’s commitment to help prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) through better and more consistent hand hygiene.

“As someone who works in a hospital and is concerned about hand hygiene on a daily basis, I’m excited about integrating this video into our staff trainings. The rap has been very popular so far – in fact, you could say it’s topping the Greenville Hospital charts,” said Tom Diller, M.D., Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety at Greenville Hospital System (GHS).

HAIs are preventable, and occur in the United States an estimated 2.0 million times per year causing nearly 100,000 fatalities, making it one of the leading causes of death behind cardiovascular disease and cancer. Healthcare providers have understood the importance of hand hygiene since 1847 when Ignaz Semmelweis proved the connection between hand washing and the reduction of deaths from childbed (puerperal) fever. Its importance is without question; yet 164 years later hand hygiene compliance, and resulting HAIs, remain a huge problem.

The Five Moments (when hands should be washed or sanitized) for Hand Hygiene, rapped about in Deb Group’s “The WHO 5” music video are:
Before patient contact; Before an aseptic task; After body fluid exposure risk; After patient contact; and After contact with patient surroundings.

The dancers in the video demonstrate proper technique for each of the five moments and were trained during rehearsals on how to perform them by real life infection preventionist Sue Boeker from the Greenville Hospital System of Greenville, SC.
Further demonstrating a commitment to front line infection preventionists and quality professionals, Deb Group also launched the DebMed®GMS™ (Group Monitoring System) in March 2011 – the world’s first group monitoring system to report hand hygiene compliance rates in real-time based on the World Health Organization Guidelines. The stand-alone system can be installed in any hospital, provides 24/7 access to compliance rates; comes with a multi-modal improvement tool kit and requires no capital investment. An annual subscription fee covers all costs including installation as well as maintenance and repairs.

“One of Deb Group’s top priorities is to provide unique solutions that help reduce HAI’s,” said Alper. “Our new rap, in combination with the DebMed®GMS, can be used as part of a hospital’s tool kit to promote and improve and hand hygiene among staff. We like to think of it as using music, dance and science to help fight HAIs.”

To view “The WHO 5” music video, please visit Deb Group’s YouTube video at http://youtu.be/GGfWUf97VHg.

Hospitals within the United States can learn how to obtain the DebMed®GMS™, by calling 866-783-0422, or emailing info(at)debmed(dot)com. class="releaseDateline">Washington, DC and Oslo, Norway (PRWEB) June 21, 2011

Twelve of the world’s leading voices for global progress and change are gathering this week for the United Nations Foundation Board of Directors meeting in Norway. The semi-annual meeting, presided over by UN Foundation Founder and Chairman Ted Turner, is taking place June 19-25 in Oslo and the northernmost regions of the country. The Board is meeting with government, corporate and nonprofit leaders to build support for UN efforts to improve global health, catalyze innovations in international development and call for global action on climate change. The Board’s discussions focus on ways to help new partners connect with the lifesaving work of the United Nations.

“Norway is a leader in tackling some of the biggest problems facing our world, and we’re proud to be cooperating so closely with the Norwegian government and the UN to improve health and education and combat climate change,” said Turner, who is also a UN Advocate for the Millennium Development Goals. “I applaud the Nordic countries for their leadership as funders of global development and supporters of the UN. They are matching rhetoric with real support, and it’s making a difference.”

The meetings are being hosted in Norway by Board member Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director-General Emeritus, World Health Organization and Former Prime Minister of Norway. While in Oslo, UN Foundation Board members will meet with HM King Harald V, HM Queen Sonja, HRH Crown Prince Haakon and HRH Crown Princess Mette-Marit. The Board’s schedule includes a special session with Norway’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg to map out ways to leverage Norway’s ongoing support of UN causes and innovations that improve women’s and children’s health, including significant commitments to vaccinating children in developing countries. The Board will discuss UN Foundation and UN priorities and programs as part of meetings with Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Erik Solheim, Minister for the Environment and International Development.

“The UN Foundation’s Board is a united voice for change. Having the Board in Norway sends a powerful message that we have a lot to learn from one another and can have a greater impact on the Millennium Development Goals when we work together,” said Brundtland.

The UN Foundation is participating in “New African Connections” – a high-level conference taking place in Oslo June 21-22 exploring creative solutions and partnerships in the areas of healthcare, finance and new technologies to advance development in Africa. Board members Kofi Annan, Gro Harlem Brundtland and Ted Turner are featured speakers on a keynote panel focusing on public-private partnerships and innovation in health. (For more information about the conference and the upcoming release of the Thematic Report on Innovation in the Global Campaign for the Health MDGs series, visit http://www.norad.no/globalcampaign.)

“We’ve got to match 21st century innovation with smart partnerships if we are going to successfully address poverty, climate change and global health,” said Timothy E. Wirth, President of the United Nations Foundation. “This week’s meetings in Norway confirm not only how far we’ve come but how much we can do to harness the power of innovation. The Secretary-General of the UN has made innovation a priority of his Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health, and the next generation depends on what we do to drive it forward.”

During the conference, the UN Foundation will preview the 2.0 version of the mHealth Alliance’s Health Unbound (HUB) website (http://www.healthunbound.org). This interactive web portal, of which the Norwegian government is a sponsor, allows people to share information and best practices about ways that mobile technology is improving delivery of healthcare to millions of people in developing countries. The conference also includes a discussion of the UN Foundation’s ongoing work to support the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (http://www.cleancookstoves.org) as an innovative way to improve health, economic development and environmental impact around the world. The government of Norway is one of the founding partners of the Alliance, which has already made significant progress on developing standards, increasing awareness and helping build the basis of a thriving market for clean cooking technologies around the world. The UN Foundation’s announcements during the conference include several commitments toward the UN Secretary-General’s Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health (for more information, visit http://www.everywomaneverychild.org).

The UN Foundation Board trip to Norway culminates in a visit to the Svalbard archipelago in the northernmost part of the country, where Board members will meet with international scientists to discuss the effects of climate change in the Arctic. Board members will offer a live briefing following their visit to Svalbard on June 23 at 10:00am ET (for details and to RSVP, contact press(at)unfoundation(dot)org).

On June 24, the Board will join Cary Fowler, Executive Director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, for a visit to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. The UN Foundation helped establish the Global Crop Diversity Trust, an effort supported by the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), to establish a universal repository of the world’s crop seeds. The Vault, which officially opened in February 2008, is designed to store duplicates of seeds from seed collections around the globe. It was created to ensure access to crops should species be lost to climate change or new plant diseases, help meet the needs of an expanding population, and provide a back-up library of seeds should any of the world’s seed collections be depleted. For more information about the Global Seed Vault, including a recent CBS News “60 Minutes” report on the initiative, see http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/03/20/60minutes/main3954557.shtml.

UN Foundation Board members joining Turner, Annan, Brundtland and Wirth in Norway are Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah (Jordan), Chairperson of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and the Jordan River Foundation; Igor Ivanov (Russia), Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation; Hisashi Owada (Japan), President of the International Court of Justice; Emma Rothschild (U.K.), Jeremy and Jane Knowles Professor of History at Harvard University; Nafis Sadik (Pakistan), Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General; Yuan Ming (China), Director, Institute of International Relations at Peking University; Andrew Young (U.S.A.), Chairman of Good Works International and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; and Muhammad Yunus (Bangladesh), Founder of the Grameen Bank.

About the United Nations Foundation
The United Nations Foundation, a public charity, was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. The UN Foundation builds and implements public/private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and works to broaden support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach. Through campaigns and partnerships, the organization connects people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems. The campaigns reduce child mortality, empower women and girls, create a new energy future, secure peace and human rights, and promote technology innovation to improve health outcomes. These solutions are helping the UN advance the eight global targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). class="releaseDateline">Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 20, 2011

On September 24, 2011, the Health Options and Positive Energy Foundation, Inc. (HOPE DC) will celebrate 23 years of bringing together the HIV+ community in Washington, DC. The celebration will be marked by a social much like the very first gathering that initiated the HOPE DC community.

In keeping with a tradition now more than two decades in the making, the HOPE DC anniversary celebration will be hosted this Saturday evening by a generous foundation member in a private home located in the in DC, MD, VA area. Details are available upon request.

The HOPE Foundation originated in 1988, during the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic, when a small group of HIV+ men met at Georgetown Hospital during clinical trials of life-saving treatments. They decided to bind together for mutual moral support away from the hospital and began hosting private social events throughout the district. The clinical trial is long since history, but the fellowship that they started is still going strong.

In 1996, the informal group became a non-profit 501C3 organization called The HOPE Foundation. Over the years, the group has grown to over 900 individuals. The gatherings are now regular events called “The Monthly Social” where HIV+, and poz-friendly, gay/bi/trans/questioning men can meet and provide support for each other in the greater Washington/Baltimore area.

The group remains active today, as the need for moral and peer support for HIV+ attendees has not changed. Over the years, services and support offered by the HOPE DC foundation have proven to be essential for the health and well-being of each social attendee. The focus of the group is primarily directed to single gay men with HIV in the Washington, DC area, but all are welcome.

“We celebrate the dramatic medical breakthroughs that have turned HIV into a manageable condition, but we are deeply aware of the social challenges of living well and responsibly with HIV,” explained Jim Garza, Vice-President of the HOPE Foundation. “That is why, after more than 23 years, we are still here and will continue to be here as long there is a need.”

About HOPE DC

HOPE DC is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that serves the HIV+ Community in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. Services provided include the Monthly Social which offers a stress-free gathering that fosters mutual support, as well as and website to share articles, information, links and resources about living with HIV, and also occasional public seminars or lectures. The HOPE DC philosophy is that by providing such services, they help HIV+ gay men foster a greater self-esteem and sense of community and that this in turn fosters the responsibility and behavior that helps diminish the spread of HIV.

To learn more about HOPE DC visit http://www.hopedc.org or Like them on Face Book.

For more information about the event please visit http://www.hopedc.org/events.

Contact Information:
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 21, 2011

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today laid out priorities that will guide his second 5-year term, naming among them extending energy’s reach in order to combat endemic poverty. Universal access to energy, improved efficiency and enhanced deployment of renewable sources are ambitious goals, and the Secretary-General is designing a Sustainable Energy for All initiative to make them achievable.

“As I see it, we have five imperatives — five generational opportunities to shape the world of tomorrow by the decisions we make today. The first and greatest of these is sustainable development — the imperative of the 21st century. Saving our planet, lifting people out of poverty, advancing economic growth — these are one and the same fight. We must connect the dots between climate change, water scarcity, energy shortages, global health, food security and women’s empowerment. Solutions to one problem must be solutions for all,” said the Secretary-General before the assembled world leaders in New York.”

“Energy is key — to our planet, to our way of life. That is why we have launched a pioneering new initiative, Sustainable Energy for All,” he stressed.

The Secretary-General had already announced on Tuesday the formation of a prestigious high-level group that will advise and guide the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative. These leaders from global corporations, financial institutions, and foundations will join with UN agencies and member states to produce a comprehensive and concrete sustainable energy action agenda leading up to the Rio+20 conference next year.

The challenge before the high-level group is substantial. Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity the world faces today. Be it jobs, security, climate change, food production or poverty, sustainable energy for all is essential for strengthening economies, protecting ecosystems and achieving equity.

In fact, more than 1.4 billion people worldwide have no access to electricity, and 1 billion more only have intermittent access. Some 2.7 billion people – almost half of humanity – rely on traditional biomass for cooking and heating.

Sustainable Energy for All will call for private sector and national commitments and attract global attention to the importance of energy for development and poverty alleviation. The goal is to meet three objectives by 2030:
ensuring universal access to modern energy services; doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency; doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

The work toward these goals will be supplemented by a Technical Group and Practitioner Network with the expertise to provide strategic and informed solutions. The Practitioner Network is led by the UN Foundation, which is collaborating with UN-Energy to advance the Sustainable Energy for All initiative.

The members of the High-level Group will be guided by co-chairs who together bring decades worth of international development and private sector experience. The High-level Group’s co-chairs are Kandeh Yumkella, Chair of UN-Energy and Director General of UNIDO and Chad Holliday, Chairman of the Board, Bank of America and former President of Dupont. Additional leadership will be provided by Timothy E. Wirth, President of the UN Foundation, who serves on the High-level Group.

Within months, the high-level group will release a multi-year action plan for how to achieve the initiative’s three goals of improving access, efficiency and use of renewable energy. In addition, the General Assembly has declared 2012 the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All, during which various public-private collaborations will work to forge political commitments and raise crucial public awareness and financial resources needed to combat energy poverty.

The United Nations Foundation will support the work of UN-Energy, a coordinating group of 20 UN agencies. UN-Energy will play a central and supporting role in this effort, raising awareness of the scope of the challenge and the importance of re-thinking current global energy strategies.

“Every global challenge ultimately comes back to energy access. Without access to energy, educating children, empowering women, and improving health are all impossible. Energy is the driver of economic growth which is necessary for alleviating poverty. This initiative marks the first time in its history that the United Nations has tackled energy issues, and the UN Foundation is committed to seeing the goals realized,” explained Reid Detchon, Vice President of Energy and Climate at the UN Foundation.

For more information, visit http://www.unfoundation.org.

Contact:
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 29, 2011

Silicon Kinetics Inc., the innovative life sciences tool company which developed the world’s first 3D biosensor surface for label-free interaction analysisintroduced a seamless fluidic/pressure interface between the Company’s SKi Pro™ instruments and mass spectrometers, for the AC-MS (affinity capture – mass spec) application. Earlier this year, the Company had announced the adoption of AC-MS by major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

In AC-MS, only the molecules with the desired binding/release profiles are eluted directly into a mass spectrometer, through a fluidic interface called SKi Bridge. “SKi Bridge brings unparalleled ease to the combining of label-free binding with MS detection,” said John Ervin, PhD, President. “Most current AC-MS customers use it to perform high throughput screens of small molecule binding, which would be impossible with other label-free instrumentation. AC-MS combines the sensitivity of label-free interaction analysis with the information richness of mass spectroscopy, in a fully in-line setup, useable up to 15,000 psi.”

The technology making affinity-capture and label-free detection possible on 3D silicon surface is NPOI, or nano-pore optical interferometry, by Silicon Kinetics.

About Silicon Kinetics

Silicon Kinetics Inc. is a privately-held life sciences tools company headquartered in San Diego, California. The Company specializes in instruments for optical interferometry on nano-porous silicon biochips. The SKi Pro™ instrument platform and the 3D SKi Sensor™ biochips are used to detect protein-protein, protein-drug, or protein-DNA interactions in real-time and quantify binding kinetics, dissociation rates, or biomolecular affinity rankings, required for the study of disease pathways and the development and manufacturing of therapeutics.
